This is an extract from our ebook: “Thriving or Surviving? myday's State of Wellbeing at Work Report - Summer 2024.”

In this report we summarise the recent findings of all the major thought leaders and global consultancies on employee wellbeing.

Introduction from James, founder of myday:

Company and employee ‘wellbeing’ are intrinsically linked. Your bottom line is actually people, not cash. Unfortunately, businesses today continuously fail to objectively link these factors.

I believe that by using first principle thinking, alongside the leading analyst reports, across a spectrum of work based health, we can begin to make positive change to workplace well-being and ethical business principles at scale. This begins with providing leaders with trends and solutions to support their people, and encouraging them to take action regardless of any constraints they may face.

Making true change in the landscape of workplace wellness and paving the way to a sustainable future also involves making a strong financial business case that will incentivise key shareholders to invest in their people.

In this ebook we delve into these complex issues, exploring 5 key trends shaping the modern workplace, including hybrid working’s positive and negative effects, management's influence on workplace wellbeing and business profitability. Finally we examine the shifting perspective on what ESG should mean to businesses owners looking to make company- and community-wide positive change.

Finding 1: More flexibility within the workplace is good for businesses and people.

In recent years, the notion of workplace flexibility has changed. What was once a desirable perk, has now become an essential component of modern work culture. One of the biggest driving forces, pioneering the rising preference for hybrid working arrangements is younger generations.

McKinsey's most recent Gen Z and Millennial survey illustrates this trend: 77% of Gen Z and 75% of millennials currently in remote roles would consider seeking new job opportunities if their employers mandated full-time on-site work. This statistic speaks volumes about the importance of flexibility in attracting talent. It's also noteworthy to emphasise that younger employees exhibit the strongest preference for this flexibility, which suggests a foreseeable continuation of this trend in the future.
